The mistake that was made in the early hours of 25th April 1915 has been covered in depth in all Gallipoli histories. Whether it was caused by a strange uncharted current, a simple mistake by the Fleet or considerable confusion, probably due to a late change of plan, still remains uncertain. The picture above was taken from the rendez-vous point where Triumph had been stationed with a beacon shining out at sea, due west of the intended landing area north of Gaba Tepe. She was to act as a starting point for the tows, but whether these followed an erroneous course is not clear. Another possibility is of course that Triumph was never at this spot, but more to the north. |
