On the western coast of Gallipoli, Gully Beach was one of the few breaks in the line of low cliffs. It marked the beginning of Gully Ravine that with its steep sides soon became one of the main access routes to the frontline of the Helles sector. This deep gully, which ran inland for about 3 miles and offered protection against Turkish observation and artillery, soon became a centre of transport activity.
