Gaba Tepe, jutting out into the sea 2 miles south of the Anzac sector, was a strongly fortified Turkish position. During the campaign, it was also the scene of Leane's ill-fated raid to test the strength of its defences. The holes in the sand wall, in which the raiding party found protection against a storm of machine gun bullets before they were saved by the Fleet, can still be seen today.
