The "Quartier St-Géry"  in Brussels has always been a very lively and dynamic neighbourhood where different cultures, young and old, artists and commerces, singles and families live harmoniously together. This neighbourhood moves and has its own identity, which you can feel when you walk through the streets. It's really a place worth seeing.

How to get there?

The "Quartier St-Géry" is situated on the other side of the Stock Exchange around the "Place St-Géry", as you can see on the map. The best way to get there is by metro line 1 (De Brouckère) or Tram/Bus (Bourse)or on foot from Brussels Central Station.   It is difficult to park in this neighbourhood, but if you want to come by car, please know that there are enough parking spaces in the centre and don't park on the footpath.

Short History of the neighbourhood:

Although not everyone agrees, Brussels was probably founded during the late 6th century as a Christian community along the Zenne river. A Frenchman named "Géry" gave his name to the island in that Zenne, where he started his work to spread the Christian belief. The "Halles St-Géry" still have his name. On this site Brussels was founded.

During the 19th century the open market place and the fountain were covered with the present "Halles". A vegetables and flower market took place here every day. On the image of the "Halles St-Géry" and the "Banana Anno 1900" (this is the lonely façade on the square) you can clearly see the coverage's.

A lively place with a nice atmosphere

It is not difficult to find the "Quartier St-Géry" as it is situated just next to the famous Rue Antoine Dansaert in down-town Brussels. In this street you can find the most trendy, stylish clothing shops of Brussels and several famous Belgian fashion-designers. During the last few years, this neighbourhood became an ideal place to go out for people who like a nice and cosy atmosphere. You can find pubs with a typical Brussels climate and others with an artistic or special interior next to each other. Also food is well presented in this neighbourhood: Asian, Russian, Brussels, French, experimental or normal, … the diversity is one of the characteristics of St-Géry. During the summertime the square and the whole neighbourhood become the "place to be" for a nice terrace in the sun. But it does not end here: also culture is well presented. Several pubs and restaurants don't only serve drinks or food but organise exhibitions of young artists. The "Beursschouwburg" is the cultural centre of down-town Brussels, where you can also have a pint of beer in a special pub. In "Album", a little museum in the Rue des Chartreux, you can find every detail you would like to know about Brussels by looking at old and new photos and interactive videos. In the near future, their will even be a cinema named "Paté Palace". Other shops worth mentioning are Akwa, a shop where you can buy all different types of water, a real record shop, and a very beautiful flower shop where you can buy arty flower bouquets. Actually, it is too much to sum up.

That is why we suggest to come and have a look yourself to taste the atmosphere and to see the colours in our neighbourhood.

The neighbourhood Party

Since 1996, the inhabitants of our neighbourhood organise a big party every year. The goal of these parties is not only to have fun, but also to show that we are happy living here, that we want our neighbourhood to live.

In 1997 we painted the façade on the square to show that we were not please with the current situation. The ruins of this building have been there already more than five years and we wanted to show that we want people to live there again. The light frames that indicate "chez Anne", "bij jou" etc. are the symbol of this longing for a living place behind the façade.

This year we had a real popular party with music bands, games for the children, a film on the façade, and lots of other things on the 30th of August 1998

This was just a short summary of the St-Géry site. Other pages of this website can be accessed using the translating tool from Alta Vista  or by viewing  the pictures of 1997 party.  or 1998 party. These are selfexplanatory.  Have fun and hopely we will meet in the "Quartier Saint-Géry"!
