Demanding a more comfortable and convenient ocean lifestyle? Traditional Hans Christian quality, elegance and seaworthiness combine with today's 50-something boat buyer's ideas of cruising comfort and safety. They typically have owned two previous "offshore capable" sailboats; and now the first mate is strongly suggesting a Trawler - primarily because of the extra creature comforts.

However, there is no boat that is safer or more comfortable riding ocean waves than a purposely designed monohull sailing vessel.

DESIGNED BY CHUCK PAINE
So our directive to Chuck Paine was to design "the buyer's last sailing vessel before he buys his trawler" without losing the seaworthiness, safety, or stability that Hans Christian Yachts are famous for. With more than 800 yachts built over the last 24 years and many of those circumnavigators, we wanted to provide our owners with a new design that matched their wish list of "next-boat" expectations. Surprisingly, the majority of the top ten "next-boat" desires related to creature comforts while living aboard at dock or at anchor, such as: more light, airiness, visibility, huge battery banks to support ice makers, compactors, microwaves, washer/dryers and other luxury lifestyle choices. In other words, the roominess, accommodations, and systems of luxury trawler living. (This may sound sacrilegious to the purist and the "KISS" proponents but the truth is, only 10% of the time are you actually sailing while on a cruise - the rest of the time you're on the hook).

SYSTEMS BY NIGEL CALDER
We asked Nigel Calder to engineer the systems using a stair-step approach so that the initial level of systems would qualify for "Coastal Cruising," a next level of system additions would provide for "World Cruising" and a third "Luxury Liveaboard" level of systems guaranteed total decadence. Simply stated, there is NO production boat available today with more well-thought-out or better quality systems! Period!Details The rest of the top-ten wish list items also related to creature comforts - but on deck: halyards and furling lines leading to the cockpit; dual forestays for alternative sails - one a self-tacking jib; cockpit seats long enough to sleep on; a helm that was easy to get around; a center cockpit set well aft to reduce motion, provide good forward visibility, and create a huge aft stateroom; and on and on.

The Explorer Series:
The concept emanated from the best ideas from owners sailing thousands of miles, which, when blended with Chuck Paine's consistently winning one of Cruising World's "Best Boat" awards; and then mixing in Nigel Calder's huge technical and maintenance experience, produced the Offshore Explorer Series for Hans Christian Yachts. The first of the series, the Offshore Explorer 4750 - is a safe, practical, efficient comfortable, fast sailing yacht designed for sailing couples in their 50s and 60s.

Real Natural Light
The deck saloon with its large surrounding windows and 8' settee provides a social base comparable to small motoryachts as well as providing an outstanding location for an optional second helm station. No more cave dwelling!

Ventilation for the Tropics:
The 9 large deck hatches, 12 operable ports, and fore and aft dorades insure light and ventilation in all wind and sea conditions, and they are all located to sweep cool air across the berths. Performance With the 45-foot-long heeling waterline, consistent 9-knot reaching speeds that provide daily passages of more than 200 miles are attainable in the trade winds (or 1400 nautical miles at a consistent 8 knots without lifting a sail - yes, long-range fuel tanks are standard).

Designed for Safety
From small details such as through-bolting and back-plating the grab rails along the entire deck house, to larger details such as watertight bulkheads fore and aft, to construction integrity with Kevlar-reinforced hull/keel joints and bow cutwater section to our trademarked "double-bow crush zone," the entire design of this model has consistently embraced safety considerations. The "double bow crush zone" is literally a complete FRP duplicate of the bow/cutwater/forehull section set inside the standard hull and separated from it 9" and travelling aft 7'. This cavity between the two bow sections is filled with a structural skeleton and closed cell foam and the entire inner bow is bonded to the outer bow with FRP and Kevlar. Structurally designed to take the shock of 36,000 lbs. of loaded boat hitting a partially submerged container, this extremely strong bow is the Explorer's most important safety innovation.

Thin Water-Short Bridges
Shoal draft of 5'9" for the Bahamas or Chesapeake Bay gunkholing, and an optional shorter mast for travelling the Intercoastal Waterway.

Battery Banks
Up to 1800 amp-hours provided by up to eight sealed Prevailer 8D gel-cells located at the boat's C.G. - all regulated and monitored with a Heart Inverter and Link 2000 and recharged with Balmar alternators.

Teak Interiors
The one embellishment we did not change was the traditional teak batten interior with the gently arched three-panel doors.

Value Pricing
Like Grand Banks, Mason, Passport, and Hylas, Hans Christian uses low international labor costs coupled with the best American and English equipment to bring you fully-equipped sail-away value pricing. As a special incentive, the next three yachts to be sold will be equipped with more than $30,000 in bonus options.
