ierland_small.jpg (6887 bytes)The Western Lakes in Ireland consist of Loughs Corrib, Mask and Carra. Lough Corrib is approx. 20000 ha, Mask 8000 ha and Carra 1800 ha.  Brown trout, pike, perch and eel are the main fish species.  Charr is also to be found on Lough Mask, while Lough Corrib also holds salmon, roach and bream. The last charr on this lake was caught approx. 16 years ago. They are one of the very last lake systems in the world where gill nets are still being used as a fishery management tool.

The Western Regional Fisheries Board (W.R.F.B.),  in charge of these waters, still thinks predator control is necessary.  On all other waters around the globe managemant has realized by now that enhancement of spawning streams, pollution control and a catch and release mentality by anglers are the key components to be focussed on to preserving and enhancing healthy balanced fisheries.

The succesful results are obvious on these other waters while the decline in trout stocks hasn't stopped on the Western Lakes in Ireland since the middle part of this century.  This major decline has occured despite the wholesale slaughter and removal of hundreds of tons of pike and perch.  The gill nets, used in these shameful operations by W.R.F.B. and it's predecessor, the Inland FisheriesTrust (I.F.T.), killed and continue to kill large numbers of glorious brown trout and salmon - all in the name of trout fishing improvement ! Therefore the Western Lakes are unique. Unique in their treatment!!!
