I am a Belfast based pike angler who fishes for pike as humanely as I can having
invested in the proper equipment to ensure the safe capture and return of the
fish I catch. Like many other like minded pike anglers I have had to endure
watching the destruction of pike on the Erne system and the Bann by careless
anglers and so called tourists who kill their catch and also commercial netting
and pollution kills. Now I discover that those in fish management are ignoring
informed advice and slaughtering the already depleted stocks of the western
lakes. Will our fisheries management personnel ever leave the dark ages and
realise their responsiblity to preserve pike and take all viable steps to
reverse their decline.
As I'm attempting to protect the Irish pike by corresponding with government
departments and concerned anglers I would be grateful for advice or helpful
correspondence.
Thank You,
Jim Allison

Stop het moorden. Pike-culling is bullshit.
Wat voor meerwaarde heeft forel tegenover snoek?
Als op deze manier de Ierse/Engelse tradities in stand gehouden moeten worden
dan wordt het toch eens tijd dat ze aan de andere kant van het kanaal hun
verstand gaan gebruiken.

The only proper form of culling on pike is done by pike themselves. The elimination of large pike leads to the proliveration of smaller ones. All types of fish have lived in harmony since time began why does man have to interfer with nature.

The WRFB need to look at introducing a bag limit/catch&release program for
trout anglers in order to help sustain trout numbers. Poorer water quality is
not helping the situation either. Removing the specimen pike from the loughs
serve only to encourage an explosion of jack pike. The only effective method of
controlling jacks is to leave the larger pike alone to predate on them. Nature
looked after its own before man (WRFB) decided to interfere.

Bad news.....The Gillnets are back on Corrib and Mask (w/e 24 Feb)Some of the
nets have been unchecked for four days. Dead pike and trout can be seen in the
nets with seagulls attacking their carcasses. Many nets are set across river
mouths creating a hazard for trout returning from spawning. The fisheries board
say that the pike are being tagged and transferred or released. Apparently no
European money is being used only Irish tax payers money.

Glad to see that the nets are put to bed for the time being.Over the last few months I have been trying to pursude the ifpac to issue a clear statment re thier stance over the kill nets.As you are awear I have had some heated heads to heads with one of the FEDS lackies. While all I wanted was a committment from the ifpac that they would no longer sit on the fence on this issue, and support the cry that was ringing all over this country at the slaughter of our pike. Not only did I fail at getting a statment from the ifpac, but I got threathened with legal action if I carried on with my actions. This is the type of people we are dealing with, they are prepared to see me in courth, rather than admit their guilt. But thank god a few of the ifpac members had the botttle to approach me at the recent Angling Expo and say how sorry they were to hear of the dirty deed that the head honchs with in the ifpac pulled.I will now drop this subject, as I have exposed the ifpac for what they really are.The IPS need your support to help over turn this crule chapter in Irish Piking, dont delay, join today.

Would I be right in thinking that those who don't give a damm about the fate of these
waters and those who inflict such destruction don't try and defend their indifference or
the actions in which they put so much faith and conviction.
They certainly don't reply to letter of protest or trouble themselves unduely with valid
criticism
The fisheries boards concerned have a brass neck and those who employ them should be asked
to go check on what is going on , are you all crazy have you no wit at all ?

I am the president of the "FEDERATION GENEVOISE DES SOCIETES DE PECHE" (Geneva's
anglers federation) and I want to tell you that you have all our support in your fight
against the killing of your pikes. The world looses every day a lot of fishes, and no
mather of wich species, at a point that we are no more able to face our obligations for
our future generations.
Killing the pikes or any other fishes will never be accepted and can never be justified to
save another kind of fish. Today, we can destroy a whole river in a minute but we still
are not able (and we can go on the moon!) to give back to the river all her capacity to
make live and naturaly reproduce all the fishes and water animals she had by the past
milleniums.
All the fishes are part of the "life chain" and every kind of fish has his
predator. So we must let them live their life and try to be (as we are) their latest
predator and the ones that never should be responsible of their destruction.
For that, no one fisherman disagrees to follow the fishing regulations if they are
positives to maintain the quantity and the quality of the fishes that are in our rivers,
lakes or seas.

opinion = I.F.P.A.C. remains silent. I don't really care if Mr.Chamber's remains on
E.R.F.B. or not , its what his Federation won't do that annoy's me and what W.R.F.B. are
doing that is the real crux of the matter.
The Federation's view of things as reported via their own notes in "Angling
Ireland" is very divorced from reality , just planet do they inhabit ?
I liked what David Overy had to say regarding the "Mantra" as recited by the
fisheries board when engaged in disucssion with the P.A.C. .
The sad fact is when you employ this "Broken Record technique" you can often
actually believe the bulls**t that you are saying , that would appear to be exactly where
W.R.F.B. are at present.
Once again the Federation must take note , this cull will not end until thereis no cash or
until there are no Pike. Please remember those two words , NO PIKE....IN THE WESTERN
LOUGHS.
Please Mr.Chambers search your soul and say something which just might amount to

why is it that the fisheries boards along with the specimen fish committe welcome and
activly encourage people to claim specimen awards for pike of 30lb (lake) and 20 lb(river)
when they are
slaughtering pike in the west of ireland.they are laughing up their sleeves at us pike

he has a bloody cheek when he knows fine rightly what is going on in mask/ corrib.
SUGGESTION; anyone who claims a 30lb pike should claim it from lough MASK or
even better dont claim it at all.if you have one of these certificates and merit badges(
for what ever species) send it back with a letter of protest.

Again we are faced with "Environmental Vandalism".
The present committee of the IFPAC have gone to ground, like ants that are been attacted
they bolt into the safty of there holes, hopeing to ride out the attact, while there loyal
foot soilders(DPA) defend the fort. Not a single word of condemnation from them regarding
the slaughter of our pike.I feel the IFPAC are looking further down the road on this
issue,if they issued a clear statment condemning the slaughter of our pike, gone would be
the very close links that they have buitled up with the WRFB-ERFB,and most importanly the
chair man of the IFPAC could kiss his post on the ERFB good bye.The committee of the IFPAC
along with there foot soilders would be better off burning there pike tackle, for they are
traitors to the cause. The word puppets spring to mind when I think of the IFPAC and there

will be cut very shortly and there will be great joy at there down fall.

intrested in the welfare of our pike,or is this just another stunt. We are led to belive
that they have make noises to the minster and there friends the WRFB,but still no clear
statment from them condemning the slaughter of our pike.If we are to sort out this mess
that the IFPAC has landed us in we first must get Chambers off the ERFB and then he mustv
resign, its the only way forward. We cant have any more back hand deale and as long as
chambres is involved with these bodys we stand the chance of a repete of his double

Bad news i'm afraid, the WRFB have been setting nets on Lough Mask for the past three
weeks. They are not tagging or releasing any pike. All pike are killed and taken away in a
trailer to an unknown destination. Many trout are also caught in these nets and any that
are alive are released, the rest go along with the dead pike.
I assume the WRFB are using Irish money,as the European funding has been withdrawn. This
money must now be stopped because the WRFB will continue this environmental vandalism as
long as they have the money to pay for it. Meanwhile the pollution continues to flow as
the WRFB look the other way.

I would have to agree with Des Tobin regarding Mr.McAllorum "interest in
comments by passionate Pike Anglers".
I saw comment by Mr.McAllorum ref. comments made by John Rooney who is a passionate Pike
Angler , condeming his critical attitude towards the I.F.P.A. asking J.R. to cease making
such remarks on D.P.A. site.
The world wide disgust recorded here (and indeed elsewhere ) by "passionatePike
Anglers" will no doubt come as no surprise to him nor should it to any other members
of the Federation who did nothing to "Save Our Western Loughs".
Fair enough John may get a little hot under the collar at times but when one is a
"passionate pike angler" that can be understood ,to date I have seen nothing
passionate from the federation other than the actions of a past Roman governor who felt
the need to go wash his hands.
When the Federatiuon saw the Western Loughs as "Trout" waters they signed away
the "rights" of pike to co exist as being secondary and as such signed away
their credibility and right to speak for "passionate Pike Anglers".
I would put my trust in those who said that "Predator Control" was a weckless
adventure based on desparation rather than logic. If all that was said was true surely all
the trout would have been eaten by the pike long time ago , mankind has more to do with
the decline of these waters than the pike. Nature finds her own balance , mankind only
serves to wreck it.

an image of being "big" on young pike anglers ,seemingly willing to be connected
with youngsters enjoying angling. This being the case why have they let them down so
completely and utterly.
The clubs affiliated to the federation should sever their links completely , from the
angling press I cannot see what they do for piking in Irealand ,angling in general ,nor
can I see that they project or enhance our image as anglers abroad.
What a total waste of time they have been seen have been . How can they say they act in
the interests of anglers or pike as a species , they are total frauds and cannot be
depended upon .
The Pike Federation of Ireland is a Judas organisation do they have a hidden agenda or do
they just not care. More importantly why have the goverment of Ireland allowed this to go
on ,who are the fisheries boards accountable to and why have they been allowed to act in
such a fashion , its nothing if not insane .
The images shown speak vloumes of r the lack of regard for waters entrusted to them - this
will not improve trout angling and has nothing to do with conservation , preservation or
enhansment of natural resources , its all about destruction and desolation.
Who at this stage of events will be willing to go on record and state publically that all
that has happen and all that may result from the actions taken to date I /we will take
full and absolute responsibility for. I ask this so anglers will at some future date be
able to direct questions to and extract answers from those who are mismanaging and
destroying fish stocks without care or regard.
Only shame can come from your actions and to date you have yet to prove your case.
Any pike angler worth his/her salt should veto all and any events run by the federation
until such time they revise their stance on the culling of pike on Western Loughs.
Can they really condone what has and is happening and say they work for the benefit of
pike and pike anglers. There are none so blind as those who will not see and pretty soon
there won't be any pike left to see or to catch , too late then to cry or to say that you
got it wrong.
Such a waste , such a shame and such a disgrace -
you gentlemen of the fisheries boards and the Federation reflect on actions and
indifference.
A final thought "P.F.of Ireland" should be renamed the "Dead Pike
Society". Would members please vote on this ? Seems it may be the only invatition to
voice your opinion that you will get.

a criminal waste of good fish and for what purpose. Can anyone tell me who will be willing
to accept the responsibility for this slaughter when the pike are gone and game fishing
fails to improve or "return to its former glory" ?
This has more to do with ignorance than science, ignorance can be excused but not in the
face of reason , sheer bloody mindedness cannot be defended. Please decomission the nets
NOW!
The PFI have been strangely silent and mute prehaps they are too fully envolved with their
next competition /heats to be bothered.
Its all rather sad, rather sick and somewhat predictable , but then what's new ?

I cannot begin to comprehend the mindset of the people who purportrate such acts,
presumably in the belief that they represent the means to a solution. Similarly and
even more regretably, having talked to these people I cannot believe that they will do
anything other than indoctrinate their children to think similarly. It would be a
brave man as would wager that they will ever wholely eradicate rascism from the Southern
States. In just the same way, is the contempt for pike every likely to be removed
from certain regions of Eire, I personally doubt it. Though I pray for the day when
I am disproven.

I was in the process of organising a pike fishing holiday in the Corrib area in early 2000 for myself and several friends, but having seen the content of this website we are now looking at alternatives. I had no idea that such barbarisms could still be practised by any fishery "authority" in these supposedly "enlightened" times. Don't they have to account for their actions at any level? Don't local MPs take any interest in what is happening? Don't local academics take any interest either? I would like to say that I can't imagine this happening in Scotland, but then I'd have found it tough to believe that such idiocies could take place in Ireland! What about embarrassing them with invited TV cameras? Although this website is valuable, it's only going to be seen by the converted. Best of luck in your endeavours.

Who are the people who sit on the WRFB? Surely they can be individually
petitioned/embarrassed by an organised campaign of questions from informed academics, MPs,
members of boards which don't apply such methods, etc. Here in Scotland I think that
such nets are actually illegal, termed as "Fixed Engines" in the old game laws.
A pity that some such couldn't be incorporated into your Irish legal system?

An excellent website. Very well put together. I fished Mask a lot in the early nineties
for pike and had some great times. It is a sad loss indeed. I have been doing a bit to
help the cause by doing slideshows on Corrib and Mask for various PAC regions. I have also
written an article on my time on Mask entitled The Secret Life of Mask. It can be found at
www.fishing.co.uk . I will be writing a
'political' article on the culling in the winter for the website so I will include a link
to your site. It only remains to say if I can help in any way at all.... Please don't
hesitate to get in touch. Best regards - Mark.

Keep up the fight, I have followed the Western Loughs debate in the Pike Anglers'
Club of GB magazine. It is sad that ignorance and bigotry still rule in an official
body like the WRFB, where
have these people been for the last twenty years?
I visited beautiful Lough Mask for a few days fishing in 1997, our host at the
B&B was incensed at
the gill netting, and told us that every time he had seen the nets removed they had
contained more specimen trout than pike. Is this the true motive of the
WRFB, either remove the big trout so that the smaller, fly feeding trout can thrive,
or to destroy the fishing altogether so they can wash their hands
of the water . So much bad feeling seems to exist now that it is hard to
see how sense, and good fishery management, will ever prevail.
Good luck, I will add a link to my website to support you.

1)Great sites !
2)It's very depressing to see wat is happening in Ireland at this moment to
"save" the trout.
I can't imaging how stupid this is, and it is clear that this pike killing is not
resolving anything. It's not only kills the pike's but also the hole ecosystem of the
lakes.
We must do something to stop this killing. You've got my support
